Hey, kids! Want to keep your paper from running a correction? Just take this graf:
Obama cited Bush's long record of public service, which began as a young fighter pilot in World War II. He said Bush's "life of service is an inspiration to all of us."

... and change "fighter pilot" to "bomber pilot." You don't even have to ask!

Doubtless a hybridization in someone's mind between George H.W. Bush, the torpedo bomber pilot, and George W. Bush, the fighter pilot.
I dunno -- if that were the case, I wouldn't expect everyone to have gotten McCain so consistently wrong. I think a lot of the audience, meaning mostly a lot of journalists, just don't make a distinction anymore between fighters and other sorts of combat aircraft.
