Quick hits on the framing front
Not a real surprise to see this bit of phrasing in the Beeb's coverage of Pakistan's latest fall from the democratic water wagon:
Pakistan has been engulfed in political upheaval in recent months, and the security forces have suffered a series of blows from pro-Taleban militants opposed to Gen Musharraf's support for the US-led "war on terror".
That sort of distancing-by-quote has been increasingly finding its way into mainstream news discourse (starting, and still most notable, on edit and op-ed pages). What's really weird is seeing it on Fox:
Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country of 75 million people, has NATO’s second-largest army, is a key ally in America’s "war on terror" and provides a vital supply route for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Yeez! Either mere anarchy is loosed upon the world or it's bread and water for the FoxNews copydesk. That's strange.
