Ray of light, or oncoming zombie spacecraft?
Been a while since I was tempted to post something on grounds it looks like good news, but this just in from the Hollywood Reporter (assist by the invaluable Romenesko):
NEW YORK -- After two decades of cutbacks in international bureaus, ABC News is bucking the trend by creating one-person operations that will dramatically boost its coverage in Africa, India and elsewhere.
A few editorial complaints spring to mind: Let's downhold the "dramatic" until we see some results. "Africa" is a continent, not a country (and how much one "youngest and brightest" based in Nairobi and roving the continent with a handheld is going to do ... see [1] above). Who's going to stick up for a thumbsucker on democratization in the Great Lakes region when Britney's about to lose custody of her Britnettes and the latest ratings show us falling behind? Having said, in effect, "don't let the door hit you" to its audience for international news, how does ABC plan to lure those folks back?
But it's a commercial network spending money and deploying its own staffers on -- mind if we quote a deputy ME speaking for many of his ilk here? -- "that foreign trivia." And without the obvious prompt of a threat to U.S. interests, or even to the safety of Our Kids' Toys. Not the upturn, or the beginning of the upturn, but perhaps a flash of brake lights on the freeway tohell All Britney All The Time.

Are we living in the End Times?
Oho, you mean the This Is The End times! I like them too, but you don't get in unless you say "terminate the colonel's command."
