Night of the living similes

Not to be rude, Nation's Newspaper of Record, but on the off chance this meant anything, what would it actually mean?

It's a texture thing, you know, so don't ask. On another front" Appalachian singing?" Funny. I thought there was more than one kind of music in them hillbillies' hearts.
