Hypercorrect capital of the Lower 48

Last couple of weeks, the campus public radio station has been modifying the traditional don't-forget-to-give-us-money-next-time-we-ask line. Now it comes out:

"... and from listeners such as you."

Buros, pls check in. Is this a trend sweeping the nation? Or are they just drinking a little too deep of the powdered soft drink mix of batty prescriptivism upcampus?

WUNC was having their beg-a-thon last week and I think I heard this construction at least once, perhaps twice, because I remember thinking that I won't be a listener such as them because I traded my Volvo for a Saturn. Plus I don't play golf.

I haven't witnessed this switch, but I did notice a couple of years ago when my local supermarkets changed their above-the-cashier signs from # ITEMS OR LESS to # ITEMS OR FEWER. Similar affliction?

There are folks around here who make it a point of pride to shop at the supermarket that says "12 items or fewer." Then there are folks who still haven't forgiven it for leaving the center city for the Burgeoning South of Town. Can't win for losing.

Sure hope the Spitfire is still in the Strayhorn family.
